Excel-freezing column while scrolling up/down?

I want to be able to freeze the first column while scrolling UP/DOWN through my spreadsheet, but MS Excel 2016 seems to only want to freeze the first column if you scroll LEFT/RIGHT.  Can this be done?  I have spent some time on it and can't seem to make it work.  Thanks!

    Hi Dan,

Freezing a column is only available for horizontal scrolling. You might want to try splitting panes instead. Check this link to see how.
