I have task which is for 32 Hours. I have set the task start date to 25th May. Now if i assign task to 3 resources it should be completed on 26th May as 3 resources are working on same task but project professional show the task end date as 29th May.

Shailender Bhatia,

Okay, I was able to open your file. What you have in your file is different from what you show and describe in your initial post. Initially you show a task as Fixed Work type which by default is effort driven. However, the actual file you reference shows the task as Fixed Units, non-effort driven. That's a different scenario.

When you assign 3 resources to a fixed unit task that is not driven by effort, Project will spread the full resource effort of all three assignments across the full task duration (i.e. the task duration is not decreased by the added effort regardless of how many resources are assigned).

What you need to do is to switch the task type to Fixed Work, like you showed initially. Then assign the 3 resources. The task duration will be decreased because of the added effort (i.e. effort driven). Or, you could leave the task as Fixed Units and check the Effort-Driven option.

Hope this helps.

John

    Shailender Bhatia,

Did you read my response? I explained a correct and incorrect way to assign the resources. If you use the correct method, 3 resources assigned to a task that starts at 8: am, (the default with a Standard calendar), will give a duration of 1.33 days (10.67 h) and finish at 10:40 am on 26 May.

No special setting, just assign resources correctly.

But how do i bring the task finish date to come down automatically if i assign 32 Hours task to 3 resources considering all 3 will work parallel on this task and assuming they start on 25th May, Finish date would be 26th May.

Is there any setting which i need to consider? or is it something not possible in project?

    Shailender Bhatia,

It's not clear if the 32 hours is the estimated duration or the estimated work. It's also not clear why your screen shot shows 40h duration.

My guess is you didn't use the correct approach when assigning resources. Take a look at this example. It shows three tasks. In the first task the work is set to 32h and in the other two tasks the duration is set at 32h. For tasks 1 and 2 resources were assigned using the Assign Resources window as shown. When using that method Project spreads the total 32h over the 3 assigned resources which effectively makes the duration 1.33 days (or 10.67h) with the Standard calendar. The finish date is 26 May at 10:40 AM. For task 3, the resources are assigned by simply checking the desired resources from the pull down selection box shown in the Resource Names field, or manually entering the resources directly into the Resource Names field. In that case Project assumes each resource will work the full duration (32h) which gives a finish date of May 28 at 5:00 PM.

    Hope this helps.

    John
