adding a trusted location

I have a peer-to-peer local area network at my house. I am the only user, but I have 3 computers on different floors of my house: one main computer, and two laptops. Whenever I open any of my own Excel or Word files on one of my laptops, I get the Protected View banner and have to click on Enable Editing to proceed. This is annoying.

I tried to add the network file folder where all my files are located as a Trusted Location, but I get the error message "The remote or network path you have entered is not allowed by your current security settings."

Can you tell me how to fix this please, so that my own Excel and Word files open without a problem?

I have a Microsoft 365 subscription, and I use Windows 10 on all computers.

Thank you.

Thank you for your reply.

I unchecked "Enable Protected View for files located in potentially unsafe location."

The files still opened with the Protected view error message.

I then unchecked "Enable Protected View for files originating from the Internet."

The files opened fine without the Protected View error message.

This makes absolutely no sense because the files are from my computers . . . .they are NOT from the Internet.

    Hi Sylvia_482:

Based on your description, we understand that you want to turn off Protected View in Office.

Please try changing Protected View settings to check whether it can meet your needs:

We advise speaking with your administrator before you make changes to your Protected View settings.

    1. Click File > Options.
    2. Click Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Protected View.
    3. Make selections that you want.

    Trust Center Protected View settings

More information for you to reference:What is Protected View? (microsoft.com)
