Hi there!

Can Microsoft Project do time tracking?

I would like to enter the time in and the time out.

If it is not possible, are there apps integrated to Project?

Thanks!

Steph

Stephanie --

In the Timesheet page in either Project Online or Project Server, you can enter how many hours of Actual Work that you performed each day. You are not entering start times or end times. The system assumes that the first day for which you reported Actual Work is the Actual Start date of the task, and it assumes that the last day for which you reported Actual Work is the Actual Finish date of the task. Following is what the Timesheet page looks like. You can see that I have tasks assigned to me from a single project, and I have the option to enter Administrative time, such as sick leave.

If your organization wanted to use Project Online, your Office 365 administrator would need to purchase licenses for each project manager and team member, and he/she would also need to create a Project Online instance for your organization. Each PM would then connect their copy of the Microsoft Project desktop application to Project Online.

By the sounds of your last question, I suspect you may be trying to use Project for the Web. Does the URL begin with project.microsoft.com? If so, you are using Project for the Web. And if you ARE using Project for the Web, team members are only allowed to enter a % Complete value for their tasks, or to mark their tasks as completed. There is NO timesheet system for Project for the Web.

Yes, I know this is very confusing. We can thank Microsoft Marketing for the confusion! :)

Please let me know if you have additiona

Thanks Dale, you are a star!!!

    Things are much clearer now.

I am looking for a project management software for my company and got confused between Project for the web and Project online.

    All the best!

    Dear Dale,

Thank you very much for your clear explanation.

    So if I understand well:

    On Project Online I can:

    • Input when I start working on task A (Time In)
    • Input when I finish working on task A (Time Out)

The software will automatically calculate the total time spent on task A and link it to my project.

    Is it correct?

How can I link Microsoft Project web application and Project Online? Sorry for my ignorance, I do not manage to understand the difference between the 2 of them.

Last question, is there any App that could calculate my timesheet and could be integrated to Microsoft Project web application.

    Thanks,

    Stéphanie

    Stephanie --

There is not timesheet functionality in either the Microsoft Project desktop application or in the new Project for the Web application. However, the functionality you seek can be found in either Project Online or Microsoft Project Server. The latter are Project Portfolio Management (PPM) tools. Project Online is cloud based, while Project Server is installed on your organization's own servers. In either Project Online or Project Server, the Timesheet page allows team members to enter their Actual Work on a daily basis. Hope this helps.

    Stephanie Courtines,

What exactly do you mean by, "time in" and "time out"? And where exactly wold you plan to enter those values?

Yes, Project will do time tracking right down to the minute but we need a whole lot more context for what you want to do. Please explain in more detail. We can't read your mind.

    John
