Microsoft Forms Time Limit

I had a student complete a quiz that I had created in Microsoft Forms with a Time Duration of 90 minutes. The student did not complete the quiz in the allotted time but instead of submitting the uncompleted quiz with what the student had completed, it gave them a message the form was not submitted. There is no End date option selected on the quiz.

Is there a way to access the uncompleted form? The Session ID is dea23f0b-e4c7-4165-8bac-9ccd1b5a124b.

    Hi Brian,

Thank you for taking the time to respond, and I truly appreciate you sharing an alternative approach to address the issue.

Additionally, after conducting further research on your case, I created a test form on the web and allowed it to expire naturally. Surprisingly, the form response was successfully saved and appeared in my results file.

Based on this, I suspect that in your situation, the issue may have occurred due to an unstable internet connection at the time the form auto-submitted, or possibly because the form creator closed the browser unexpectedly. In such cases, Microsoft Forms may not be able to capture and save the user's response properly.

I sincerely apologize for any confusion caused earlier and hope you can understand this oversight. Your feedback has been incredibly valuable, and I’m committed to helping ensure a more reliable experience moving forward.

    Sincerely,

Clover-L - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialist.

    Thank you for the response.

I have removed the "Set time duration" for the future. In the settings in the Form, when you hold your mouse over the info indicator next to "Set time duration" it says "Responder can fill in the form during the set time. Editing is not allowed after the timer ends. Their answers will be auto-submitted when the time is up." Might want to pass along to whoever can revise this that the need to change the wording on this if it is not the case.

    Dear Brian,

I hope you have a good day. Thanks for choosing Microsoft Community.

We're sorry to hear you're experiencing issues with the Microsoft Forms timed quizzes not submitting. Based on your description, I'd like to provide the following insights and recommendations:

    • Microsoft Forms does not currently auto-submit responses when the time limit expires. If the student does not manually click Submit before the timer ends, their responses are not saved or submitted
    • The session ID you provided is used for internal diagnostics and cannot be used by end users or admins to retrieve unsubmitted responses.
    • If the form was hosted in OneDrive for Business or SharePoint Online, and the student clicked "Submit" before the timeout, the response would appear in the Responses tab or in the Excel export. If not, unfortunately, the data is not recoverable
    • This is a known limitation of Microsoft Forms. The platform does not autosave or autosubmit partially completed responses when the timer expires. Microsoft recommends that users submit their responses manually before the time runs out to ensure data is captured.

    Recommendations:

    1. Provide Clear Instructions: Inform students to submit their responses before the timer ends.
    2. Use Practice Runs: Encourage students to test the form in advance to understand the timer behavior.
    3. Submit Feedback to Microsoft:
    • You can submit feedback directly from the form editor: To send feedback about Microsoft Forms, go to the upper right corner of your form and select More form settings Feedback

Your feedback is valuable and contributes to the ongoing improvement of Microsoft 365 products. I hope the information above is helpful in giving you a better understanding of Microsoft Forms. Please know that we truly appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to support you. If you need any further assistance or clarification, feel free to reach out—we're here to help. Thank you very much for your understanding and your cooperation.

    Warm regards,
