Using Azure shared disks between two Azure VMs hosting SQL Server, there is an interest in understanding the support for Performance Plus, which is known to enhance disk IOPS and throughput for Premium SSDs. However, clarity is needed regarding its support for shared disks.

Can someone from Microsoft confirm the following:

  • Is Performance Plus supported for Azure shared disks?
  • If not, is there an official document that states this limitation?

The current disk type is Premium SSD (LRS), larger than 513 GB, and it is shared between two SQL VMs. The goal is to optimize performance for SQL Server workloads.

Any guidance or official reference would be appreciated.

    Hello @Sai Praneeth Eranti,

I am here to assist you.You can enable Performance Plus for a managed disk at the time of its creation. Please note the following limitations:

It can only be enabled on Standard HDD, Standard SSD, and Premium SSD managed disks that are 513 GiB or larger.

It must be enabled during disk creation.

It cannot be enabled on disks created as part of virtual machine creation.

It is not supported for disks recovered using Azure Site Recovery.

Workaround: If you need to enable Performance Plus on an existing disk, you can create a snapshot of the disk and then create a new disk from that snapshot, enabling Performance Plus during the process.
