Python UDTFs in Unity Catalog are now generally available

Registering Python user-defined table functions (UDTFs) in Unity Catalog is now generally available in Databricks Runtime 18. A Unity Catalog Python UDTF is a governed function that returns a table, invoked in the FROM clause of a SQL statement to return multiple rows and columns. Unity Catalog Python UDTFs run on serverless compute, classic compute with standard access mode, and SQL warehouses.

Unit testing for pipelines (Beta)

You can now write and run Python unit tests for your Spark Declarative Pipelines on Lakeflow transformation logic directly in the Lakeflow Pipelines Editor. Validate Python and SQL transformations against mock data using catalog-table redirection, including Auto CDC, streaming tables, expectations, and append flows. Test edge cases and iterate using mock inputs for supported table-identifier operations; review the isolation limitations before running tests. This feature is in Beta.

Lakeflow Designer Summer Release

The Lakeflow Designer Summer Release adds new operators, expands the Output and Join operators, and improves the canvas editing experience. The following updates are now available:
- Prepare operator: Use the new Prepare operator for common data-cleansing tasks, including changing text case and data types, replacing values, and applying formulas. See Prepare.
- Enter Data operator: Manually create tabular data in a spreadsheet-style editor. See Enter Data.
- Select operator: Use the new Select operator to choose which columns to keep, rename columns, and reorder them in the output. See Select.
- Visualization operator: Create and view visualizations directly on the canvas. See Visualization.
- Improved Output operator: The Output operator now supports inserting or appending data in Unity Catalog tables, publishing results as materialized views, and writing CSV, Excel, or JSON files to Unity Catalog volumes. See Output.
- Split Join outputs: The Join operator now provides three outputs by default: unmatched left rows, matched rows, and unmatched right rows. This makes it easier to branch a workflow based on join results. See Join.
- Case-sensitive joins: The Join operator now includes a Match case option and matches string keys case-insensitively by default.
- Matched and unmatched Filter outputs: The Filter operator now provides separate outputs for matching and non-matching rows, so you can branch data based on whether it meets the filter conditions. See Filter.
- Improved date filtering: The Filter operator's date picker now supports navigating across years as well as months.
- Additional AI functions: The AI Function operator now supports
ai_query,ai_parse_document,ai_forecast, andai_prep_search. See AI Function. - Folder and volume inputs: The Source operator can now target an entire Unity Catalog volume or folder path instead of an individual file. See Source.
- Metric view sources: Use Unity Catalog metric views as source nodes in Lakeflow Designer. See Source.
- Inline Note editing: The Note operator now supports inline rich-text editing directly on the canvas, including headings, text styling, links, images, and tables. See Note.
- Easier node connections: Redesigned node ports provide larger connection targets and clearer visual cues, making operators easier to connect.
- Clearer operator configuration cues: Unconfigured operators now have a dashed border, and required input ports that aren't connected are highlighted in yellow.
- Table of contents panel: Find and navigate to any operator using the new searchable table of contents in the left sidebar. Select an operator to focus it on the canvas, then expand the Generated code section to view its underlying code.
- Command palette: Press Cmd+Shift+P on macOS or Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows to quickly access editor actions.
- Visual data prep listing page: Find all of your visual data prep files from a dedicated Visual data prep page in the sidebar. The page includes a getting-started video banner to help you start using Lakeflow Designer.
- Improved caching: On all-purpose compute, downstream operators can reuse cached upstream results, reducing repeated work for long-running steps such as AI functions.
- Large-canvas performance: Scrolling and panning are more responsive on canvases with more than 200 operators.
- Serverless environment selection: When working with visual data prep files, you can now choose the serverless environment used for both interactive runs and scheduled jobs.
- Improved scheduled-job readability: Scheduled visual data prep runs now display each operator as an individual node in the Jobs task graph instead of showing raw Python code.
- Declarative Automation Bundles support: Deploy and run visual data prep files with Declarative Automation Bundles by configuring them as notebook tasks and referencing the file path in
notebook_task.notebook_path. See Move a visual data prep file to production.
Git CLI commands in Git folders are now in Public Preview

Git CLI commands in Git folders are now in Public Preview. Git folders that you create from the UI automatically get Git CLI access when your workspace is eligible, so you can run standard Git commands such as git stash, interactive rebase, pre-commit hooks, Git submodules, and Large File Storage (LFS) directly from a Azure Databricks terminal. Workspace admins can control access to this feature from the Previews page. See Use Git CLI commands.
Governed tags system table is in Beta

The system.tags.governed_tags system table is in Beta. This table contains a record for each governed tag key in your account, including customer-created and system-generated tags. Use it to programmatically determine which tags in your account are governed.

Genie Code scheduled tasks are in Beta

You can now schedule Genie Code to run a prompt on a recurring schedule. Each run executes your prompt as a full Genie Code session and produces a continuable Genie chat with the results, so you can turn recurring analysis into an unattended background task. Priority pay-per-token for Foundation Model APIs

Variant and Variant shredding are now generally available

Variant is now generally available. Variant is a flexible data type for semi-structured data that delivers structured-like query performance through Variant shredding, which is also generally available. Use Variant to ingest semi-structured data from streaming sources (Kinesis, Event Hub), REST APIs, and schemaless databases, while maintaining high-performance query access.
Starting with Databricks Runtime 17.3, Variant shredding is automatically enabled when you create a new table with VARIANT columns. For optimal query performance with variant statistics collection and data skipping, Databricks recommends Databricks Runtime 18.1 or above. See Use variant shredding to optimize performance.
Variant is coming soon to workspaces with the compliance security profile enabled.
Role-based access control (RBAC) is in Public Preview

Role-based access control (RBAC) is now in Public Preview. RBAC lets users assume a role in Azure Databricks using only that role's permissions for the duration of the session instead of their own accumulated permissions. This enables exclusive access. Users must actively assume a role to reach sensitive data, which prevents them from accessing it as their own identity and from mixing data across use cases, clinical trials, projects, or clients.
To enable RBAC, an account admin turns on the preview at the account level. Workspace admins then enable it in each workspace.

Transactions are now generally available
July 22, 2026
Transactions that write to Unity Catalog managed Delta tables are now generally available. Group multiple SQL statements across one or more tables into a single atomic transaction using BEGIN ATOMIC ... END; or BEGIN TRANSACTION; ... COMMIT; syntax. All changes succeed together or roll back together, ensuring data consistency across your operations. Transactions require catalog commits enabled on participating tables. Transactions that write to Unity Catalog managed Iceberg tables remain in Private Preview.

Email notifications for expiring service principal tokens are now generally available

Azure Databricks now automatically sends an email notification when a service principal token is set to expire within seven days. Because service principals don't have their own mailboxes, Azure Databricks sends these notifications to workspace admins. Notifications are sent only for service principal tokens that have a lifetime longer than seven days and have been used at least once. No configuration is required.

Networking charges for performance-intensive products

Azure Databricks now charges for cross-region and public-internet data egress back to the client for performance-intensive products, including Lakebase, OpenSharing SecureConnect, Zerobus, and Files API. Client ingress and same-region egress are not charged. This charge applies to all customers using these products, regardless of whether they use serverless or classic compute. To track this usage, the billable usage system table adds the recipient_id, associated_product, and networking_client fields to usage_metadata. See Understand Databricks networking costs.
Databricks-hosted sample datasets available in the samples catalog

The sample datasets /databricks-datasets mounted to DBFS are now also available in the samples catalog as samples.databricks.datasets, made available through OpenSharing. The datasets volume hosts a collection of Azure Databricks-provided datasets that you can use to build and test data pipelines.
The samples catalog is available in Unity Catalog-enabled workspaces. For more information about the sample datasets available in the samples catalog, see Sample datasets.
Override the REPLACE WHERE predicate for a single refresh
July 22, 2026
You can now override a standalone streaming table's defined REPLACE WHERE predicate for a single refresh by adding a WHERE clause to the REFRESH STREAMING TABLE command. The override applies only to that refresh and doesn't change the table definition, which is useful for one-time backfills and corrections. This is supported only on standalone streaming tables created with a FLOW REPLACE WHERE clause. See REFRESH (MATERIALIZED VIEW or STREAMING TABLE).
Governance Hub is in Beta

Governance Hub is in Beta. Governance Hub is a centralized, account-level UI in the account console for monitoring governance across your Azure Databricks account. It provides a unified view of data health and coverage, AI usage and spend, and cost drivers, with prioritized insights and recommendations. All views respect existing permissions.

Genie One and Genie Agents billed usage corrections

Genie One and Genie Agents usage is free through July 31, 2026.
Beginning July 21, 2026, Databricks is applying a correction so that Genie One and Genie Agents usage is properly reflected as free across your billing data and budgets:
- System tables: Correction records land in
system.billing.usagethat negate prior Genie One and Genie Agents billed usage, so that aggregated billable usage is zero. See Record type reference and Monitor and understand your Genie cost. - Budgets: Genie One and Genie Agents costs are netted out of budget enforcement. As a result, spend shown in the budget UI will drop slightly. In some cases, a user who was previously over their budget threshold may fall back under it once their Genie One and Genie Agents costs are netted out.
This is a one-time adjustment. Genie Code usage and billing are unaffected.

The ai_extract and ai_classify SQL AI functions are now available by default for workspaces with the compliance security profile enabled and HIPAA, HITRUST, C5, and TISAX controls selected.
Use ai_extract to extract structured fields from unstructured text against a user-defined schema. Use ai_classify to classify text into user-defined labels for routing, tagging, and document categorization workflows. You can also use Agent Bricks to create an information extraction agent and a classification agent.
Genie One and Genie Agents usage is free through July 31, 2026

Set a target QPS on standard AI Search endpoints to power high-throughput, real-time workloads like search bars, recommendation systems, and entity matching. High QPS is enabled by default, but existing endpoints are not affected. Additional capacity and the associated cost apply only when you configure a target QPS for an endpoint.

Trigger.AvailableNow support for OpenSharing streaming (GA)

Streaming reads from OpenSharing tables now support the Trigger.AvailableNow trigger. This trigger captures the shared table's current version when it starts, processes all available data across one or more micro-batches (honoring maxFilesPerTrigger and maxVersionsPerRpc), and then stops, which is well suited to scheduled, batch-like incremental processing. Previously, Trigger.AvailableNow on a OpenSharing source was converted to Trigger.Once, which processed a single micro-batch per run. This feature requires Databricks Runtime 18.0 or above.

You can now store, govern, and access secrets as securable objects in Unity Catalog. A Unity Catalog secret uses the three-level namespace (catalog.schema.secret) and is governed by Unity Catalog privileges, so you can apply the same access controls and auditing that you use for other data assets. Starting July 8, 2026 at 00:00 UTC, Genie products, including Genie Agents, Genie Code, and Genie One, are billed following a pay-as-you-go pricing model that includes 150 DBUs of free large language model (LLM) usage every month, equivalent to about $10.50 in the US East region. Usage beyond the free amount is billed in DBUs, reflecting the underlying LLM models and agents that power each Genie session. For more information about pricing, see Azure Databricks pricing.

Object metadata column is now in Public Preview

The _object_metadata column is now in Public Preview. The _object_metadata column is a hidden metadata column that exposes object-level properties for objects in cloud storage, including MIME type, ETag, user-defined key-value metadata, system-defined metadata, and object tags. It is available starting from Databricks Runtime 18.1.

Budgets are now generally available

Budgets let admins define spending thresholds. For requests managed through Unity AI Gateway, including Genie interactions, admins can set additional per-user thresholds and overrides, with configurable actions such as email alerting and usage blocking.

Standard performance mode is now supported for materialized view or streaming table refreshes in jobs

Materialized view and streaming table refreshes that are orchestrated through a SQL task in a Lakeflow job now respect the job's Performance optimized setting. When the setting is turned off, the refresh uses standard performance mode, which consumes fewer DBUs.

Lakeflow Connect row filtering is now generally available

Row filtering in Lakeflow Connect is now generally available. Row filtering allows you to ingest only the rows you need by applying conditions similar to a SQL WHERE clause, improving performance and minimizing data duplication. Row filtering applies during both the initial load and subsequent incremental updates, and is supported for SaaS connectors including Google Analytics, Salesforce, and ServiceNow, as well as all query-based connectors.

An integrated CDC pipeline ingests change data from MySQL into Azure Databricks using a single pipeline, combining extraction and application into one pipeline update. Veeva Vault connector (Beta)

The Veeva Vault connector is now available in Lakeflow Connect in Beta. Workspace admins can control access to this feature from the Previews page.
The connector uses Veeva's Direct Data API to ingest all standard objects, custom objects, system tables, and audit trail tables from your Vault instance into Azure Databricks. Authentication uses OAuth 2.0 M2M via Microsoft Entra ID.
