In this module, you implemented just-in-time privileged access across the full scope of a Microsoft cloud environment using Privileged Identity Management (PIM).

You started with the structural risk: standing privilege gives attackers an unlimited exploitation window, and blast radius expands with every over-privileged permanent assignment. PIM addresses this by making eligible access the default—granting access only when activated, for as long as needed, under conditions you define.

You then applied that posture layer by layer:

  • Microsoft Entra roles—you protected the identity plane by assigning eligible access to high-blast-radius roles and configuring activation controls aligned to the risk each role carries.
  • Azure resource roles—you protected the resource plane using PIM's scope hierarchy, applying eligible assignments at the subscription, resource group, and individual resource level based on a risk-tier model.
  • PIM for Groups—you replaced per-user assignment sprawl with group-based assignments, enforcing a single activation policy across an entire team and reducing both configuration drift and audit surface.
  • AI workloads and applications—you extended the same human-access model to AI control planes, and drew the architectural boundary between PIM-governed human engineers and RBAC-governed workload identities.
  • Design patterns—you connected the individual controls into a coherent privileged access strategy using five decision patterns, from eligible by default to the break-glass exception.

A well-implemented JIT strategy doesn't minimize privileged access—it structures it. Every assignment becomes a decision, every activation becomes a record, and every expired session closes a window that would otherwise stay open indefinitely.
