Request for Clarity on Calculating Early Deletion and Tier Change Penalty Costs

When changing the access tier from cold or cool to hot before the minimum number of days, the calculation of the penalty cost is unclear as the documents do not mention a mathematical formula. Is there any tool available where one can input the amount of data and other parameters to calculate the early deletion and tier change penalty costs?

Hi KindCompute-6524 - Thanks for reaching out over Q&A Forum.

When it comes to cooler tiers there is a minimum retention day period tied to a blob. i.e. the blob shall reside in that tier for atleast that much time frame else the early deletion charges might apply. These values are:

For Cool Tier - 30 days

For Cold Tier - 90 days

For Archive Tier - 180 days

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/blobs/access-tiers-overview

Consider a blob which was moved to COLD tier on 01/07/2024 now it should remain in Cold tier for 90 days i.e. until approx. 09/29. If we move the blob prior to that the early deletion charges will be applied on pro-rated basis and is mainly around the capacity of the blob.

    Hope that helps!

Please let me know if there are any further queries/concerns, will be glad to assist.
