Make a backup of your message store as it is likely somewhat corrupt.  Make sure your inbox is not over a few hundred megabytes or else it will self-destruct and you will lose all the messages.  After making a backup, then do a File | Folder | Compact all and that will take care of any wasted space in the message store and also may fix any minor corruption issues.

Its important to backup the message store frequently as it gets very unstable at times.
