Hyper-V Won't enable "Error code: 0x80073701" (Windows 10 Pro on AMD CPU x64-based), probably due to corrupted update.

(1) Hyper-V Won't enable "Error code: 0x80073701, missing assembly code" (Windows 10 Pro on AMD CPU x64-based).

(2) I followed suggestion from this site, and checked the C:/Windows/CBS/CBS.log. It points to error when "exec resolving" KB4483234

(3) I checked my PC update history,  KB4483234 is not there.

(4) I looked up KB4483234 on Microsoft web site, it was released December 2018 and was part of KB4477137.

(5) I can see KB4477137 in my PC's update history.

(6) Microsoft web site's article suggested me to re-install the KB4477137 through Control Panel/Check Updates.  But I cannot: neither be able to install it nor uninstall it, probably because multiple updates applied after this update. The "uninstall" button just not show up for this update in Control Panel.

(7) Is there a way I can fix this problem and enable Hyper-V?

I tried method 2 and method 3 before I posted the original question. They didn't work.

I ended up resetting the computer from control panel with option to preserve other files. This triggers reinstalling all system files and service packs (KB). After this, everything works.

Thinking back, resetting wasn't that difficult, just took a couple of hours. I am glad Microsoft has this option for us.

    Anyway, my problem solved.

    Thank you Roohi!

I did the following from Power Shell in Admin mode

    PS C:\windows\system32> wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:4477137 /quiet /norestart

    PS C:\windows\system32> wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:4480966 /quiet /norestart

    PS C:\windows\system32> wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:4483234 /quiet /norestart

    then restarted my computer

Afterwards I checked Control Panel -> Program and Features -> View installed updates. The 3 KB are all still there

Thank you for the confirmation, Daniel.

Could you please confirm, whether you have followed Method 2 and Method 3? I would suggest you to follow the rest of the steps and let us know about the results.

    We await your response.

    Hi Daniel,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

0x80073701 error code occurs due to the previous updates that were not completely downloaded or because of corrupted files. In case if you are trying to install a particular update for the second time manually, we may come across other errors as it already contains some of its components.

KB4477137 is a security updates released in the month of December. If you wish to uninstall this update, you can do it from the command prompt.

    1. Search for Command promptin the Cortana, right click and Run as Administrator.
    2. Type: **wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:**4477137 /quiet /norestart
    3. Now, Restart the computer and check if the KB is still listed.

To resolve issues related to Hyper-V, please follow the steps given below and check it is helpful to you.

    Method 1: Check for Updates.

As the updates are incomplete or pending updates are yet to be installed. Open the Settings page > Go to Update and Security> Click on Check for Updates. Once the updates are installed, restart the pc and check for the issue.

Method 2: Enable hyper v through PowerShell.

Hyper-V can be enabled in many ways including using the Windows 10 control panel, PowerShell (my favorite) or using the Deployment Imaging Servicing and Management tool (DISM).

I would suggest you to follow the Microsoft article on Install Hyper-V on Windows 10, which contains steps that may prove itself useful to you.

Method 3: Perform an in place upgrade.

If the above methods doesn’t help, I would suggest you to follow the article and the video on **How to perform an In-place Upgrade with Windows 10 Step-by-Step Guide**from PaulSey… dated on 9^th^ August 2017.

Note: A repair upgrade is the simple process of installing a new build over the existing installation of Windows 10, using the Windows 10 ISO file. It replaces the broken operating system files while preserving your personal files, settings and installed applications. However I would still suggest you to take a backup of your files and proceed with the installation

    Hope it helps.
