Microsoft Basic Render Driver instead of Geforce 1050ti Driver

I am having problems with my wife's laptop which is preventing it from playing 95% of games. One example is Trine 2.

This problem just started recently and I don't know if it's because of an update or something else that happened. When attempting to launch the game, I would get a Direct3D Initialization Error. I did find multiple threads on steam relating to that error and it suggested I try deleting the options.txt file for the game itself so it could be recreated. If not that, then try changing the resolution in the file's options or change it to windowed mode. Of course, none of these suggestions fix the issue. I finally discovered what the problem was. It turns out that the Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630 was being used rather than the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 ti driver. This is shown in DirectX Diagnostic Tool along with the advanced display settings.

I then disabled the UHD Graphics 630 in the device manager. At that point, I think all is well.

At this point when trying to run the game it was super laggy (as in 1 frame per second). I also tried a different game and this one had the same issue. However, it was nice enough to inform me that my GPU is insufficient. When I look at the error, it shows "Microsoft Basic Render Driver". Checking DirectX Diagnostic Tool and Advanced display setting, the same thing shows up. The interesting this is that device manager shows the nvidia driver and the intel 630 driver (which of course is disabled).

  • Tried reinstalling the Nvidia and also tried the Display Driver Uninstaller tool by Guru3D to uninstall the old driver
  • Tried using an older Nvidia driver
  • Tried rolling back windows updates
  • Tried sfc /scannow and there were no issues shown
  • Tried installing drivers directly from HP
  • Updated the BIOS
  • Tried reinstalling one of the games
  • Tried installing first the Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630 driver and then the nvidia driver

Not sure what else I need to try.

One last this I find that's strange is when I plug in an external display, it comes up as the Nvidia driver. So it's the laptop display that seems to only work with the Microsoft Basic Render Driver.

check and see if there is a new BIOS for your motherboard, it may solve some of the problems

which make and model of motherboard are you using?

Thanks, everyone who has replied to this so far!

I did go with JenniferCooper19's suggestion and reinstalled all the drivers. I even install the Nvidia driver last. Unfortunately, this didn't fix the problem. Here's something interesting I noticed when I plugged my monitor back into the laptop. An error message came up saying that the driver failed and so it was switching to the Microsoft Basic Render Driver. Unfortunately, I did not get a screen capture of it. I also saw the yellow triangle next to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti in the device manager.

In the properties of the device > general tab > under device status, I noticed that there was an error code. Unfortunately, I didn't get a screen capture of this either. At this point, the device status says it's working properly. It might have been when I tried re-disabling the Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630, but I honestly can't recall. I think the error code was 22, but again not 100% on that. Here's something I found in the event viewer that might be useful:

Faulting application name: dwm.exe, version: 10.0.17134.1, time stamp: 0xf5178e97 Faulting module name: dwmcore.dll, version: 10.0.17134.441, time stamp: 0x8b352f6e Exception code: 0xc00001ad Fault offset: 0x00000000001cdff2 Faulting process id: 0x312c Faulting application start time: 0x01d4ca1da2d4b84a Faulting application path: C:\Windows\system32\dwm.exe Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\dwmcore.dll Report Id: b94cb0e7-7b74-4a33-a6e4-ed6527499432 Faulting package full name: Faulting package-relative application ID:

I did a google search and it seems that this is indeed related to the graphics driver. So far, the only thing I tried was disabling fast boot under the power option of "choose what the power buttons do". I'll keep looking into this.

Also, BossDweeb I made sure the laptop was on high performance setting for the battery and still no luck.

Hardcore games, I unfortunately, did not see such a setting in the BIOS. The settings there a pretty basic and there isn't any mention of being able to disable the integrated graphics.

"I find that's strange is when I plug in an external display, it comes up as the Nvidia driver"

Any chance the only time you plug your laptop into a power outlet is also when you connect to an external monitor  ?

Do you have Windows Power Options set to us a High Performance power plan ?

"the intel 630 driver (which of course is disabled)."

I'm surprised your games launch at all. I was wondering why your machine was using the generic Windows VGA drivers.

This would explain the game using the basic Windows VGA driver instead of the Intel HD graphics, when the 1050 does

not get selected for the job.

    Hi, AndrewM777.

My name is Jennifer and I am an Independent Advisor.

I would be happy to help you today.

I can suggest to download all the drivers of the computer,

the most appropriate is to go to the official website of

your computer, download and install manually, when the

driver must be restarted after each installation must

"accept", it is very important that you uninstall the

driver video that you already have installed and install

the one you are going to download.

I will also recommend that you perform a clean boot of

your Operating System, so that you can do it properly I

will leave you a link with all the information:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929135...

Would you be so kind to say if this solved the problem?
