How do I get the MSG command working on CMD?

Good Afternoon EST,

I've been trying to get at this issue for a while, I have an issue where a coworker on my LAN (hardwired) is able to use the msg command and message me with no issues however I can't seem to message him back. I've checked his computer name computername (confirmed computer name is correct) and I am able to ping his computer with no issues. However I either get a message stating |user does not exist or is disconnected. | error 1722 | error 5| or * does not exist |.

the commands I've been using:

MSG * /SERVER:computername /TIME:60 "test"

MSG /SERVER:computername * /TIME:60 "test"

MSG /SERVER:computername /TIME:60 * "test"

MSG username /SERVER:computername /TIME:60 "test"

MSG /SERVER:computername /TIME:60 * test

MSG /SERVER:computername /TIME:60 test

...

As I've said, I am able to ping his machine with no issues, and he is able to message me with no problem.

I have changed the DWORD value on the AllowRemoteRPC Registry Key from 0 to 1, I have also added an inbound and outbound firewall rule for TCP Port 445 to allow any user. I then rebooted my PC after this step.

I've tried this in CMD using the default directory, I've tried running as admin, I've tried powershell. Nothing seems to work.

I'd also like to add that I am running Windows 10 Pro we are both connected to our Domain through AzureAD and both logged on to those AzureAD users, I have however tried both my local admin account as well as my AzureAD Admin account, no luck. I'm at a loss, hoping someone has a resolution, thanks.

Hi, I'm Elise, and I'd be happy to help with your issue.

As the previous user advised this type of issue I would recommended posting in the Q&A forum, as this is the intended audience for these type of queries:

However also looking at the commands you are using I would suggest trying to use an IP address rather than the host name to see if the result changes.

    Kind Regards,

    Elise

Hi, my name is Anderson Souza, I hope I can help you with your issue.

I believe that your question will be better resolved if it is posted in a more suitable location such as the new Microsoft Q&A forum that is replacing the old TechNet. As it is a corporate network environment with corporate network technologies, I imagine this is the best path for you, in the Q&A there are IT professionals with more experience in this type of environment.
