Footnote not working

Question

I have tried several workarounds (including changing spacing for both the text body and the footnotes), but I cannot seem to get the footnote function to work.  I am able to select "Insert Footnote," which creates the superscript for the footnote:

But, no space appears to actually insert the information.  If I attempt to go into the actual footer, there is no footnote space. 

I haven't been able to capture it, but when you place the cursor over the superscript, a comment box appears, but I can't make it open.

Switch to Draft view (View > Draft) and then click Show Notes on the References tab. You should then see the footnotes in a separate pane.

If the Show Notes command is greyed out, the document doesn't contain any footnotes. Then something is wrong with the creation of notes.

On the other hand, if you are able to click References > Show Notes and you do see footnotes in the pane, but you can't see them in Print Layout view, then something is wrong with the formatting of footnotes. In the Apply Styles pane (Ctrl+Shift+S), you can type Footnote Text and click Modify. Make sure that the font size is readable and that text isn't formatted as hidden or in white color.

Welcome to the Community Forum. Sorry to hear you meet this problem, and I am glad to help you on this case.

Based on your description, you can’t add the footnote content at the end of the page while you have footer added on the page at the same time. I test that by my side and I have no issue to add both footer and footnote together on the same page. As you haven’t mentioned whether you are using Word for Mac or Word for Windows, I just test in Word for Windows. See the screenshot below:

If the issue only happens to a specific document, please try to copy and paste content to a new created one to see the result.

If the issue happens to all documents even a new created one, to check whether the issue is related to the corrupt Word template, please first try to use another template to see the result.

1.       Are you using Word for mac or Word for Windows? Please provide us the screenshot of the Word version.
