Excel tool to record errors/problems occurring behind the scene

Is there an Excel tool or Office tool I can install that will record what is occurring with a Microsoft product, in this case MS Excel. I am having a weird issue with an Excel file. When I open a specific Excel file and make some changes, I perform a Save As with a modified name. Instead of saving, Excel temporarily goes to a 'None Responsive' mode, which I see at the top left of the green label bar, then opens a Excel session with the same file name but at the end of that file name shows Recovered. Never seen that before. I'm running MS Excel 365. This is a company business license.

I figured if I can download and install a tool whereby I can run through the sequence to generate the symptom, it will log every step/process Excel undergoes and give me a better insight at what is going on in the back end. Is there a tool like that?

Dear Raymond,

Good day! Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

Based on the description you are encountering a situation where a specific Excel file that’s been Saved As with another name temporary stops responding and opens with an old name and mark “Recovered”. So, you would want to know if you can use any tool to track the Excel processes and get a report on what exactly causing this behavior.

If my understanding doesn’t match with your situation, please post back and correct me.

Speaking of the tools that could record Office processes and provide the reports of backed, I’m afraid, Microsoft does not provide any Office debug tools for public use. We may suggest look for third-party software, but we do not provide any warranty about reliability of other programs.

Due the situation with Excel file, the most possible reason of this behavior is that the file has been corrupted.

We suggest you copy the data from an issued file to a new Excel workbook. You may need to copy the data partially instead of all together and save new workbook after every copying.

For more information how to repair corrupted file, please check this article Repair a corrupted workbook (microsoft.com)

If the provided suggestion doesn’t solve an issue, we kindly ask you to share some additional information, so we can investigate this behavior.

  • Please tell us your Product Information and Office version. You can find it in any Office app in File tab > Account. Please take a screenshot of this page and post here (mask the private information)
  • Run Excel in safe mode and check the results to narrow down the interference of add-ins.
  • Try to repair an Office application and check the outcome.

Thanks for your cooperation. Look forward your reply.

Sincerely,

Igor | Microsoft Community Moderator
