Headers and Multi-level lists

I have set up Header I and Header 2 as ARTICLE I and section 1 respectively but when I enter an ARTICLE using the Multi-level list feature, there are about 5 spaces after the numeral. This means it is not centered. My intent is to do a soft return (SHIFT + enter) then add the heading title (Offices, Board of Directors, etc). But because of the spaces it comes out offset and not centered with its heading title. I have looked at every setting I can find and tried to manually remove the spaces, but no luck. Any suggestions?

Thank you. The "follow number by" got rid of the space!

    Hello,

In Microsoft Word, the issue you're encountering with the multi-level list and headings not being properly centered usually comes from the settings used within the list style or the paragraph formatting for those headings.

To address this, you may need to adjust the formatting specifically for the multi-level list and ensure that the 'Following character' setting after the number is set to nothing instead of a space. Here’s what you can try:

    1. **Modify Multilevel List Settings**:
      • Highlight the list item that is not aligning correctly.
      • Right-click and choose 'Adjust List Indents...' or go to the 'Home' tab, then click on the 'Multilevel List' drop-down in the 'Paragraph' group and select 'Define new Multilevel list...'.
      • Choose the level that you are trying to modify (for ARTICLE I, it would be level 1).
      • Look for 'Follow number with:' option and make sure it is set to 'Nothing' or if it must have a character, use the tab character and set the tab stop position to align with your title.
      • Check that 'Aligned at:' and 'Text indent at:' values are set to match where you want your text to start.
    2. **Modify Paragraph Spacing**:
      • With the same text selected, right-click and choose 'Paragraph...'.
      • Ensure that 'Indentation' settings are not causing the offset. Specifically, the 'Special:' dropdown should be set to '(none)' and 'Before text:' should be zero or as desired for proper alignment.
    3. **Heading Style Modification**:
      • Go to the 'Styles' pane by clicking the small arrow in the bottom right corner of the 'Styles' group on the 'Home' tab.
      • Find the style you are using for your ARTICLE headers, hover over it, click the arrow that appears, and choose 'Modify...'.
      • Under 'Format' at the bottom left, choose 'Paragraph'.
      • Here, make sure the indentation and spacing settings are as you desire.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, consider the following additional steps:

    • **Remove Manual Spaces**: Sometimes there might be manual spaces that are not part of the style. Place the cursor after the numeral and use the backspace key to see if there are any manual spaces.
    • **Check for Hidden Formatting**: You can also reveal all formatting marks by clicking on the '¶' symbol in the 'Paragraph' group on the 'Home' tab. This can help you identify if there are any non-printing characters causing the offset.

If you have done all this and the issue persists, it might be a bug, or another hidden setting may be causing the problem. In this case, sometimes copying the content into a new document can help, or if the issue is very persistent, contacting Microsoft Support may be necessary.

    Best Regards, Saurabh
