Microsoft word multi-level list issues

Hello,

I have a document where I need to use the multi-level list. I have styles set up in the top ribbon in "1. Heading", "1.1 Heading", "1.1.1 Heading" etc.

I have had some issues with the mutli-level list in the document, but mainly got it sorted, until I reached "3.10". For some reason, when I click on the "1.1 Header" styles to input:

"3.10"

Instead it duplicates and does this below::

"3.10

3.10"

If I delete one, it deletes the other. Any ideas?

    Hi,

Here is my writing on multilevel lists in a pdf with multiple links.

Automatic Numbering in Word - my 5-page pdf

I can conceive several ways this could happen.

Could you save that part of the document with the problem on OneDrive or DropBox and post a link here so we could look at it rather than trading guesses back and forth?

Why a sample file is important for troubleshooting - - - - - - - and how to do it.

For a more thorough investigation into what has happened with the numbering format in your document, you will have to share a sample, as suggested earlier.

The key to setting up stable, long-term numbering is discussed in the article for which Suzanne provided a link: https://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbering20072010.html.

You won't be able to use Set Numbering Value and similar options if your objective is to control the restarts in a predictable way.

Abandon the idea of applying list styles. Word is not designed to work that way. Instead, create the list linked to paragraph styles and then apply the styles to add the numbering. I believe this is made clear in Shauna's article at https://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbering20072010.html. Although she recommends creating a list style, I have never found this necessary. I just define a multilevel list linked to the styles I plan to use and apply those styles to get rock-stable numbering.

    Hello,

Welcome to the Microsoft Community Forum. Please accept our warmest regards and sincerest hope that all is well despite the situation you find yourself in.

    Possible Fixes:

    1. Reset the Multi-Level List
      • Click on any numbered item in your list.
      • Go to Home > Multilevel List and select Define New Multilevel List.
      • Ensure the numbering format is correct for each level.
    2. Check for Hidden Paragraph Marks
      • Press Ctrl + Shift + 8 to show paragraph marks.
      • If there are extra hidden markers, delete them.
    3. Adjust List Indents
      • Right-click on the numbered list and select Adjust List Indents.
      • Ensure the "Follow number with" option is set to Space or Nothing, instead of Tab.
    4. Manually Set Numbering for "3.10"
      • Click on the problematic number.
      • Go to Home > Numbering > Set Numbering Value.
      • Enter 3.10 manually and check if it stops duplicating.
    5. Check for Style Conflicts
      • If your list is linked to styles, go to Home > Styles and ensure each heading level is correctly assigned.

    Hope this helps.

    Best Regards,

    Fordy B.
