Hello!
If you've lost access to your admin Microsoft account because your MFA (multi-factor authentication) device is lost, I know this can be very stressful—but you're not alone, and there's a path forward.
Here’s what you should do:
If there is another admin:
If your organization has another global admin, reach out to them first. They can log into the Microsoft admin portal, find your user account, and reset your MFA settings. Afterward, when you try to log in, you'll be prompted to re-register your authenticator app.
If you are the only admin:
If you’re the sole admin and completely locked out, you’ll need help from Microsoft’s Data Protection team. Community forums and support staff don’t have the permissions required to reset admin MFA on business accounts.
- Go to the Microsoft 365 business support phone numbers page.
- Find the support number based on your region and call directly.
- Explain you are the only admin, your MFA device is lost, and you need to regain access. Be prepared to prove your identity with things like domain registration information, payment info, or anything related to your account.
Extra steps/tips:
If you purchased through a reseller or Microsoft partner, let them know—they may be able to reset your account as well.
If you have any alternate sign-in methods (backups), check if those are available at sign-in.
After you regain access, consider adding backup admin accounts and extra authentication methods to avoid this situation in the future.
Unfortunately, the recovery process can take a little time due to important security measures, but calling Microsoft Support is ultimately the solution. They'll verify your ownership and help restore your admin access safely.
Wishing you a smooth and quick account recovery!
Best regards,
Jerald Felix
