Try these steps in order, focusing on when Excel “locks up” (stops responding) and when it says the file is locked and won’t allow edits.

1. Check if the file is actually locked for editing

• If Excel says the workbook is “locked for editing”:
  • Make sure the file is closed on all devices where the same account is signed in.
  • Wait a few minutes so the server (OneDrive/SharePoint/iCloud) can release the lock.
  • If someone else has it open, ask them to close it or give edit permissions, or open the file as read‑only.

2. Remove features that can cause “locked” errors If the file is shared/co-authored and keeps becoming locked:

• Turn off the Shared Workbook feature if it’s enabled.
• Ensure the file is in a supported format (.xlsx, .xlsm, or .xlsb) and not Strict Open XML.
• Remove or adjust unsupported features that can block co-authoring:
  • Remove password encryption or restricted access from the file.
  • Turn off Refresh data when opening file on all tables and PivotTables.
  • Disable any Excel add‑ins that might be causing locks.

3. Fix “locked due to previous crash” situations If Excel or the device previously crashed while the file was open:
