How do I reinstall drivers for USB flash drive? I read that might help finding USB flash drive on File Explorer. Flash drive does not show up on screen, but it does generate sound when plugged in.

    Hi Rick Brown,

    Thank you for reaching out.

If your USB flash drive makes a connection sound but does not appear in File Explorer, it usually means Windows is detecting the device, but it may not be mounting or displaying it correctly. Reinstalling the USB drivers can help refresh the connection.

Please try these checking steps to reinstall USB drivers:

    • Right‑click Start and select Device Manager.
    • Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    • Right‑click each USB Root Hub, Generic USB Hub, or USB Mass Storage Device, then select Uninstall device.
    • Restart the computer to allow Windows to reinstall the drivers automatically.

If the USB drive still doesn’t appear:

    • Open Disk Management (right‑click Start > Disk Management) and check if the drive is listed there.
    • If the drive is present but missing a letter, assign one using Change Drive Letter and Paths.
    • You can also return to Device Manager and select Action > Scan for hardware changes.

These steps help Windows re‑detect the device and resolve common display issues.

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

    1. Have you tried connecting the USB drive to a different USB port to see if it is detected?
    2. Also, when you open the Disk Management window, do you see your USB drive listed there?

    User's image

Search for disk management in the search bar on the taskbar and click Enter.

Post a screenshot of the resulting dialog box.

Follow these steps to reinstall the USB flash drive drivers and refresh USB detection in Windows 11.

    1. Reinstall the USB storage device driver
    2. Save all work and close all apps.
    3. Right-click the Start menu and select Device Manager.
    4. In Device Manager, expand Disk drives and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    5. Under Disk drives, look for any entry that appears when the USB flash drive is plugged in (often shows the brand/model of the flash drive). Under Universal Serial Bus controllers, look for entries such as USB Mass Storage Device that appear when the drive is connected.
    6. Right-click the USB flash drive (under Disk drives) and select Uninstall device. If there is a USB Mass Storage Device that clearly corresponds to the flash drive, right‑click it as well and select Uninstall device.
    7. In the Uninstall Device window, confirm by selecting Uninstall.
    8. Unplug the USB flash drive.
    9. Restart Windows: right-click the Start menu, select Shut down or sign out > Restart.
    10. After Windows restarts, plug the USB flash drive back in. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver automatically and re-enumerate the device.
    11. Reset USB controllers (if the drive still does not appear) If the flash drive still does not show in File Explorer but makes the connection sound, reset the USB controllers:
    12. Open Device Manager again.
    13. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    14. Right-click each entry under Universal Serial Bus controllers and select Uninstall to remove it.
    15. After all USB controllers are uninstalled, restart the computer. Windows will automatically scan for hardware changes and reinstall all USB controllers.
    16. Plug the USB flash drive back in and check File Explorer.
    17. Additional checks
    • If the drive still does not appear in File Explorer, open Disk Management (right-click Start > Disk Management) to see if the drive is listed without a drive letter or as unallocated. If it appears there, assigning a drive letter or creating a partition/formatting (this erases data) may be required.
    • If the flash drive does not appear in Device Manager or Disk Management at all on any USB port or another PC, the drive itself may be faulty.
