The DevOps Engineer Expert certification has mandatory prerequisites. The lock icon means the certification itself cannot be earned unless one of the prerequisite certifications is active on the Microsoft Learn profile.
Key points based on the current program:
- Required prerequisites
- Must hold either:
- Azure Administrator Associate, or
- Azure Developer Associate
- These are explicitly listed as required components for DevOps Engineer Expert.
- Must hold either:
- Using an exam token from Microsoft AI Skill Fest
- The token can be used to sit for an exam, but it does not bypass prerequisite rules for the certification.
- Practically, the token should be used on one of the prerequisite exams first (Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Developer Associate).
- Earning DevOps Engineer Expert
- Sequence:
- Pass the exam that grants Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Developer Associate.
- Pass AZ-400: Designing and Implementing Microsoft DevOps Solutions.
- Only after both are active will Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert be awarded.
- Sequence:
- About Azure Developer Associate retirement
- When Azure Developer Associate is retired, it remains a valid prerequisite for DevOps Engineer Expert for a period of time before being removed.
- The new Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate will be added as a prerequisite once it is live.
So the token cannot be used to skip prerequisites and go straight to DevOps Engineer Expert. It should be used on a prerequisite exam first; after that, AZ-400 can be taken (with or without another token), and then the DevOps Engineer Expert certification will be granted when both requirements are met.
