How to move my resource (VM) to another subscription under a different directory without impacting my associated data disk?

My lab has been running a VM (and a data disk on it) on an account for a while under the default directory and a regular subscription. My university later assigned us some education credits to our account, but as a different directory and a different subscription. How can I move my resources (VM+data disk) to this new subscription under a different directory without the risk of losing my data on the data disk?

    How do I move my virtual machine (VM) with attached data disk to another subscription?

    You can use Move > Move to another subscription with your VM resources and your attached data disk selected:

    Make sure that all VM resources as well as the attached disk are selected, then click Move > Move to another subscription:
