Here are the possible solutions per my experience:
- One possible solution is like your solution, use a script to move the existing computer account to another OU before renaming the computer.
- Another option is to use a different naming convention that includes a unique identifier, such as the MAC address or UUID, to avoid conflicts with existing computer accounts. This can be achieved by modifying the task sequence to use a custom script to generate the computer name based on the unique identifier.
- It is also recommended to periodically clean up inactive computer accounts in SCCM to avoid clutter in the console. This can be done using the "Delete Aged Discovery Data" maintenance task in SCCM.
