How to Control File Previews with IRM Enabled in SharePoint Server 2019 Modern UI

We have enabled Information Rights Management (IRM) on a document library in SharePoint Server 2019. In the modern UI, users are able to preview files and images even though they are IRM-protected, and the previews are not encrypted.

We would like to control these previews by either:

  1. Displaying a template instead of the actual file during preview, or
  2. Adding watermarks or some form of overlay to the file preview to reinforce protection.

Is there a way to achieve this in SharePoint Server 2019, and if so, what are the recommended approaches or configurations for this?

    Hi @PratikSavla,

Information Rights Management (IRM) policies protect sensitive content from unauthorized users by preventing users from printing or saving copies of a file. Currently there is no such function to display a template file using IRM.

As a workaround, you could add the related column as a label in information management policy to document content type, when you open, download or print the file using this content type, the label will exist.

For detailed information, please refer to follwoing article, this is a sample about displaying version column, you could change it to createdby column.
