mouse pointer disappears when using Mini Display Port to HD AV Adapter on Surface Pro 3

So I plugged in the Microsoft Mini Display Port to HD AV Adapter, and connected a HDMI cable to my TV. The desktop screen showed both on the Surface Pro 3 and the TV, but no mouse pointer on either. How can I fix this?

    1.  I don't have a different display adapter to test with.
    2. If I reboot while the Surface is connected to the HDMI display, I get the same results, no mouse pointer.
    3. This is complicated. After rebooting with the Surface connected to HDMI, I set the mouse pointer to the default setting and then I observed that the mouse pointer was invisible as before. I then rebooted leaving the HDMI connected and that time the mouse pointer was visible for a bit and then disappeared. I rebooted again and the pointer stayed.  I then set the pointer back to Magnified and it remained visible, and I rebooted and it remained visible.

I have one other observation, and that is when the HDMI display is attached, the gesture signon tracks aren't displayed (finger, not mouse). Also, when I say that the Mouse pointer is invisible, I only mean the Default mouse pointer. The text insert pointer and the wait pointer sometimes displayed when the default pointer wouldn't.

Also I should note that the mouse pointer is visible on the lock screen under any circumstance, only disappearing for good after the Desktop is displayed, or a bit after the Start screen.

At this point, I have a mouse pointer with HDMI, but I am not sure how I could tell someone else how to fix the same problem, or whether mine will stay fixed.

    1. Yes, I have all updates installed and checked to verify this manually.
    2. Yes, I can see the full scale of the screen.
    3. I had the Surface cover attached when I observed the problem and was using the touch pad on it.

I will add that I can actually do things using the touch pad, and hovering the invisible mouse cursor over screen elements causes mouse hover events to fire. I just can't see the mouse cursor. I also tried attaching a real mouse, and got the same result. I also tried attaching the HDMI cable to a computer monitor instead of my TV. Same result.

As soon as the HDMI cable is removed, the mouse cursor returned.

Note: I have my mouse Pointer Scheme set to "Magnified (system scheme)"

    Hi there,

    Thank you for replying back.

"Gesture Sign On" you mean Charms Bar? How do you project your screen?

Best Wishes and Happy New Year,

    Clare

    Hi there,

Thank you for replying back with more details.

    1. Will you see the same thing if you reboot the Surface while it is connected to an external display via HDMI?
    2. Will you see the same thing if you set the mouse scheme as default?
    3. Will you see the same thing if you use a different minidisplay to HDMI adapter ?

    Let us know.

    Kind regards,

    Clare

    Hi kwdavids,

Thank you for bringing this question to us on the community. We understand you are not able to see your mouse cursor when you connect your Surface Pro 3 to the TV, correct? We will do our best to help you here.

Could you give us more details:

    1. Do you have all updates installed?
    2. Can you see the full scale of the screen?
    3. Can you see the cursor if you use a mouse or a Surface cover?

To make sure you have the latest updates install, please check for updates manually: Rememeber to****connect your device to a power source and a Surface cover (if you have one) while updating. You can see the detailed update information for Pro3 here.

    1. Open Windows Update by swiping in from the right edge of the screen (or, if you're using a mouse, pointing to the lower-right corner of the screen and moving the mouse pointer up), tapping or clicking Settings, tapping or clicking Change PC settings, and then tapping or clicking Update and recovery.
    2. Tap or click Check now, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your PC.
    3. If updates are found, tap or click Install updates.
    4. Read and accept the license terms, and then tap or click Finish if the update requires it.

Please reply back and let us know what's happening.

    Regards,

    Clare
