Windows 7 will not install a printer, error code 0x0000070d.

Hi. I have trying to get this working for a while now. Basically we have printers on a network server and I want to add one. I go through the Add Printer wizard and can see the printer. However when I select the printer it pulls overe the drivers from the server then when it tries to connect, I get the 'Windows  Cannot connect to printer, error code 0x0000070d' message. I have tried with a different printer and I get the same thing. I'm not sure why this is happening. The printers print ok from XP machines. Can someone help me on this? Thanks.

Yeah none of this stuff worked  called MS and spoke with an engineer there he said that this error was an odd one might be SP1 related but not certain.  The solution was one that worked but not one I was too happy to hear but it was the only one that worked because we tried them all and it was to go back to square one and do a full install of windows all over again.

You can imagine the glee that I felt at the time nothing more thrilling than to hear that great news but it worked so just think of it as you being the lucky one chosen to be an unpaid beta tester.  I know the MS faithful wont like this but its what it feels like.  Not loving this windows 7 too much paid way to much to have no say in the matter.  My computer my rules.

    Sad but true.  good luck

Hi. Thanks for replying. This seems to happen for any printer on our print server. I tried to create a local port (Standard TCP/IP port) but I can't seem to add the server and printer name (no \ allowed). I can only enter the syntax**\ServerName*PrinterName*** in the network option. I think I need to play around with this a bit more. If you have any other suggestions please let me know. Thanks.

    Hi Rudolph Scott,

o   What’s the make and model number of the printer?

o   Also, is that the correct error code?

As far as the error code goes, there is no information related to it. Verify if you have the correct one.

By the way, here is one way of adding network printer. See if it helps. In addition your might need to install the appropriate driver that is designed for the printer.

    Step 1:

Create a local printer, and then redirect the port to the network server. Follow these steps:

    a)   Go to  Start > Devices and Printers.

    b)   Click on “Add Printer”.

    c)    Click “Add a local Printer”.

    d)   Select “Create a new port” and then type the server and printer name for the printer in**\ServerName*PrinterName*** syntax.

    Step 2:

Update the printer driver on the server.

For driver updates, refer this link:

Update a driver for hardware that isn't working properly

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Update-a-driver-for-hardware-that-isnt-working-properly

Moreover, your printer should come with the manual that has instructions for how to properly set up a printer on network. See if there is any such for reference.
