Checkpoint error on boot

I get several checkpoint errors when attempting to boot a Dell Dimension desktop. The computers runs through the large DELL screen and then begins giving checkpoint errors.  The first one is xbye.  If you force a reboot, the next one is HDsk. You may also get AUX for a checkpoint error.  It will then go to a screen asking for a password.  The people who own the computer say there is no password. I have attempted to locate the password. Now after 7 attempts, it is totally blocked and shuts down.  You cannot got into setip with F2. You cannot get the boot log with F12. How do you fix this problem.

    Thanks, Savan.

No changes have been made to the computer. It will not let me run the Dell Resource CD. It will not even recognize the Windows CD when I simply attempted to reinstall the OS. I thought perhaps needed a new HD, but wanted some additional advice before installing one.

    Hi MildredBrown,

    1. Do you make any recent changes hardware or software on your system prior to this issue?

It looks like a possible hard disk issue. Since you can't use F12, I would suggest you to try the diagnostics on the Dell Resource CD (Utilities and Drivers) which can be booted to test.

    Hope this information is helpful.

    Thanks and Regards,
