Error code: 88780078

Hello,

I was receiving the following error message from Winamp: "Bad DirectSound driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device configuration. Error code: 88780078" This occurred after the computer installed an automatic update. Trying to restore to an earlier working configuration has not worked, or rather couldn't work as the network programs running in the back ground are some how preventing the computer from executing the restoration.

I used online help and reinstalled the Realtek Driver for the sound card in my PC from http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/SOUND-CARD/OTHER-SOUNDCARDS/Microsoft-UAA-Bus-Driver-for-High-Definition-Audio.shtml. I also had to physically download the hdaudbus.sys file.

Winamp is now work and not giving the error message but the sound, particularly singing, is distorted. I have played with the Winamp configuration settings without any success.

Does anyone have a solution to this? Have I downloaded the incorrect drivers or errored in replacing the defective driver?

I work at a univeristy but have been informed by the IT department that they no longer offer support for Windows Vista so I'm counting on finding a solution here. Upgrading to Windows 7 is not an option due to hardware/driver/Windows 7 incompatiblities.

Thanks

Does the sound work fine on other programs, like windows media player, for example? If so, have you considered uninstalling and reinstalling Winamp? If you do this, make sure you have your key handy.
