Windows 11 upgrade processor compatibility

Question is this,

The OS update screen says that the PC concerned (Dell XPS) doesn't currently meet the system requirements to run Win 11, OK no problem go through the PC health check and all is compliant except the processor:

  • Op system is Win 10 Pro 21H2
  • The processor is Intel Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz 2.80 GHz

The Microsoft doc 'Windows 10 21H2 Supported Intel Processors' found here:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/minimum/supported/windows-10-21h2-supported-intel-processors

Indicates that the i7-7700HQ will work with Win 11 and is compatible, so my question is this, which is correct? The message from the OS or the supported processor list (also by Microsoft).

Any help would be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Hello, I'm A&K, here to help.

This is a bug in the health checker, if your hardware doesn't meet the Windows 11 requirements, it will take you to the Windows 10 processor support list by mistake, when in fact it should take you to the Windows 11 processor support list list.

You can see Windows 11 supported processors there,

AMD: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardwa...

Intel: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardwa...

    Glad to help.

Microsoft's support for Windows 10 will continue until at least 2025, which is enough for most older devices to finish their life cycle.

Many thanks for your time and the reply, I suppose that raises the question of how much longer will MS support Win 10, I can't see MS supporting two flagship OS for very long. There are going to be a lot of users in the same situation, I have been checking various machines in the house, I now have three that won't upgrade to Win 11, all of them around four/five years old and all high spec when purchased.

    Such is life
