I arrived on the problem mentioned in title after facing another huge issue. To explain the whole scenario better I am writing things chronologically.

  1. My OneDrive is logged in with my personal MS account. I unknowingly logged into my professional account on OneNote in the past. Since then, I have been creating new notebooks by clicking the OneDrive location (for sync feature). I realized that this is a problem when I tried accessing the notes on my mobile(android) by logging into the professional account. I couldn't find my notebooks and notes there.
I don't know where they actually exist!

I want to move professional account data to my professional OneDrive account. How to separate both the accounts in my scenario?

  1. After facing this issue, I logged in to my personal account in OneNote thinking I won't face any issue as OneDrive is also of same account. But now I can't even create any notebook on windows altogether. When clicking the new notebook button there is no OneDrive option and "this pc" shows an error. I have attached the screenshot.

ps. I am able to create new notebooks on my mobile (personal account). But they don't appear on pc.
Strangely when I logged into personal OneNote account on mobile the notes that I made in prof. OneNote account appeared.

I hope I was able to convey my problem properly. Even I am confused why things are happening this way. Please help me fix the issue.

Things I have tried doing -:

  1. Reinstalled OneDrive
  2. Reinstalled MS Office 365

I am feeling extremely foolish after finding out the root cause. I tempered with the privacy settings and unknowingly unselected the "All Connected Experience" option. Now things are working completely fine after checking that option.

    My problem has been solved.

My takeaway from all this going around in circles episode with OneNote -:

    1. No matter what account one is using in OneNote, the notes will always be available with the account which has cloud storage (OneDrive). One needs to login to the cloud storage account in OneNote to seamlessly benefit from the sync feature.
    2. Windows needs to do something about the reinstallation. When user reinstalls official apps then they should again get presented with the settings which they got during the first time opening the app. Carrying the settings for future reinstalls defeats the purpose especially during troubleshooting.

Anyway, thanks for everything Michael Jr.

    Hello Michael Jr,

Thank you very much for responding to my query.

    1. I am using my personal account to sign in to OneDrive.
    2. No, I haven't added my work email in my device like in the screenshot you attached. I only logged in to OneNote with my work email. So, while I was creating notes I was using work account in OneNote but the OneDrive was logged in with personal account.

Few things I have discovered are -:

    1. Even though I logged in with work email, all my notebooks were getting created in personal account only. When I tried using other devices to log in to the different accounts, personal account had all the notes but prof. account was empty.
    2. Notes created on personal account in different devices (except my pc) are even syncing across devices properly.

The problem that I am left with is -:

    1. (Only on my pc) Even after reinstalling everything and then logging in to my personal account in OneNote, OneDrive option is not showing after clicking create new notebook. I am not able to open old notebooks present in OneDrive as well. In other devices everything is working as expected.

Even the account section seems to be missing few options.

I think some files got corrupted in system level or something. I am not able to find any helping articles to solve this niche problem. I would really appreciate your help.

    Thank you

    Hello Subham,

Thank you for writing to us here in the Microsoft community.

I understand that you want to use Microsoft 365 OneNote. Based on the information that you provided there are possibilities that it may cause this specially you have a work email and a personal one. Since you already done troubleshooting, we can narrow the issue more.

I just want to ask a few questions as to narrow down the problem.

    1. May I know what account is being signed in to the OneDrive?
    2. Did you add your work email address in your device?

Here are some troubleshooting steps that may help resolve your solution:

    1. Sign in to OneNote online. Check if your notebook are there. You need to sign in with your personal account.
    2. Temporary disconnect the Work Account.

Let me know if the issue persists, and we can have other options.

I hope you find this information helpful.
