I'm attempting something very basic: I have 2 SPO lists:
In List A, I have a column where I want to show a text field column from List B
So, I create the lookup column in List A, referencing the textfield in List B (not a calculated field, not another lookup field), but it's a total no-show in List A.
I hope the screendumps explain.

If you go to the classic view of that list, do you see the data populated?

When you create a lookup column, the default value is empty, you should select value in the lookup column.
