Our VM users frequently report performance issues. We are running the QuickBooks application on our VM, which I believe relies heavily on Microsoft SQL Server. The RAM usage is consistently high, and I suspect the CPU is also under heavy load. Even establishing a connection takes a long time, and once connected, the system runs very slowly and struggles to handle any applications. We kindly need your urgent assistance to address this issue as soon as possible.

Could you please answer below queries to help us understand and narrow down the cause for the issue :

Are you using any B-series VM size?

Do you see high RAM/CPU usage even without the application running ?

Are you using Windows based VM or Linux based VM?

Can you review what applications are having high RAM usage:

If using Windows-UI based VM, sort it out in descending order and review the applications and processes and let us know.

if it's non-UI based Windows based OS, try running below Powershell command to find out the same:

Get-Process | Sort-Object CPU -Descending | Select-Object -First 10 Name, Id, CPU, @{Name="Memory(MB)";Expression={[math]::round($_.WorkingSet / 1MB, 2)}}

If using a Linux based OS:

Use below commands:

top

ps aux --sort=-%mem | head -n 10

Additionally, please run the perfinsights on your VM to see if that helps to diagnose the issue? (refer: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/azure/virtual-machines/windows/troubleshoot-high-cpu-issues-azure-windows-vm?wt.mc_id=knowledgesearch_inproduct_azure-cxp-community-insider#run-perfinsights)

Have you tried resizing your VM to higher SKU to see if that mitigates the issue? (kindly refer: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-machines/sizes/resize-vm?tabs=portal)

As discussed, offline, kindly let us know if you are still hitting high Memory (RAM) usage or high CPU after resizing the VM to F8s_v2 Vm Size.

To proceed further, we kindly ask that you run the PerfInsights tool and share the report with us. For more details, kindly refer: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/azure/virtual-machines/windows/troubleshoot-high-cpu-issues-azure-windows-vm?wt.mc_id=knowledgesearch_inproduct_azure-cxp-community-insider#azure-portal-option-1

If the report shows any High or Critical impact related to non-azure processes, this will indicate that the high resource consumption is likely due to the usage patterns of the VM.

In that case, best solution is to consider resizing the VM to a larger size, which can help accommodate the increased demands.
