Cannot create backups in Microsoft Authenticator

UPDATE: As the comments below state, it started working automatically starting May 19th, 2026

I noticed that the Microsoft Authenticator couldn't create backups. I toggled it off and now when trying to turn it on again, I get the following error:

Something went wrong. Please send us logs using the Send logs option.

I have more than enough space on OneDrive. I'm logged in with a personal Microsoft Account. The application is up-to-date and I even tried the beta version.

Apparently, the problem has been resolved. I tried to restore the backup today (May 19, 2026), and after several days of problems, everything worked fine.

My entire digital life was protected by Microsoft Authenticator, so those were very stressful days.

I have the same problem and I've seen other similar reports recently. I've reported it using the app, but I'm not holding my breath for a response.

My guess is that Microsoft have a problem with the authenticator backup/restore functionality.

It would be good if someone from Microsoft could report as to whether they are aware of the issue, and whether they are finding a resolution.

The error message indicates that backup isn’t actually signed in/initialized, even if a personal Microsoft account is present in the app. To get backup working again after turning it off, re-establish the backup account and backup state:

1. Open Microsoft Authenticator on the device.
2. Go to Settings (tap the menu icon, then Settings).
3. Under Backup:
   • Turn Cloud Backup (Android) or iCloud backup (iOS) off if it appears on, and confirm deletion of any existing backup.
   • Turn the backup toggle on again.
4. When prompted, choose Continue or Change account and explicitly sign in with the personal Microsoft account that will hold the backup.
5. Confirm and complete the backup setup.

If the “Something went wrong” message appears because the app is not properly signed in for backup, these steps force a fresh sign-in and backup creation.

If the problem persists, use the in‑app Send logs option as suggested in the error so that support can review the failure details.
