Xbox-related updates on a Windows 11 PC are just regular Windows app/feature updates (for example, Xbox app, Xbox Game Bar, or media apps) that are part of the operating system image or were installed previously. They are maintained through Windows Update and Microsoft Store like other inbox apps, even if Xbox features are not actively used.
These updates are installed because:
- They are included components of Windows or preinstalled apps.
- Updates may contain security fixes, reliability improvements, and compatibility changes.
- Windows Update and WSUS (in managed environments) keep all installed components up to date by default.
To reclaim space and reduce impact:
- Use Storage / Cleanup recommendations
- Select Start > Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations.
- Review Temporary files, Large or unused files, Unused apps, and remove items not needed.
- This can include cached update files and other system content that Windows no longer needs after updates.
- Use Storage Sense (automatic cleanup)
- In Settings > System > Storage, turn on Storage Sense.
- Storage Sense can automatically remove temporary files and items in Recycle Bin, helping offset the space used by updates.
- Use external storage when updates require extra space
- If Windows indicates more space is needed for a feature update, an external drive can be used so less space is required on the system drive.
Note that feature and quality updates temporarily require extra disk space to download, apply, and keep rollback files (typically for about 10 days). That space can be reclaimed afterward via Storage / Cleanup recommendations.
