I have copilot on my laptop and iphone and when i am using the speech mode it keeps switching back to the text mode screen, sometimes mid conversation. How do i stop this from happening? It happens every 5 minutes.

Copilot Voice sessions are time-limited and will automatically disconnect after a period of inactivity, which returns the experience to the text (chat) screen. This can feel like it is “switching back” every few minutes, especially if there are pauses in the conversation.

Key behaviors and what can be done:

    1. Voice sessions auto-end after inactivity
      • In Microsoft 365 Copilot voice chats, if there is no speech activity for 30 seconds, a notice appears warning that the session will end in another 30 seconds. After about one minute of inactivity, the voice chat ends automatically and Copilot stops listening.
      • When the voice chat ends, the interface returns to the regular text chat view.
    2. Background noise can keep or drop the session
      • Background noise can sometimes be interpreted as speech and keep the session alive; conversely, if the device stops detecting speech clearly, the session may end and revert to text.
    3. How to keep using voice
      • When the session ends and the screen returns to text mode, start a new voice conversation by tapping the microphone icon in the Copilot app’s composer.
      • On Windows desktop with Microsoft 365 Copilot, voice chat can also be reactivated via the Start a new voice chat button in the Message Copilot compose box, or by using the Copilot key / Win+C to open Quick View and starting voice again.
      • If using the “Hey Copilot” wake word on Windows, ensure Listen for "Hey Copilot" is turned on in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app’s Quick View settings so voice can be reactivated hands-free.
    4. No setting to disable the timeout
      • The auto-disconnect/time-limit behavior for Copilot Voice sessions is built-in and cannot be turned off. Voice conversations may also be time-limited by service capacity and will disconnect automatically when the limit is reached; when that happens, start a new voice session from the text screen.

On both laptop and iPhone, the practical workaround is to restart voice from the microphone button whenever the session times out and the interface returns to text.
