To host a static website in azure blob storage, do I really need the static website settings?

If we are serving static website through Azure Blob Storage, one option is to use the built-in "static website", which serves files from the container $web.

Another is to create a public container with the name that you want, and put static files there.

Both can make use of CDN and rules engines.

Are there any difference between those two approaches? pros/cons?

@David Beyda Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A. I understand that you have questions regarding hosting a static website on Azure Cloud i.e., if using the default static website container $web vs using a Public Container.

    • One of the main benefits would be that you can access your website without needing to use the container name. Find the website URL
    • Another benefit is the support for custom error page for 404 error.

Here is a similar thread with the same question- https://stackoverflow.com/questions/63157480/difference-between-azure-static-website-and-blob-container-integration-with-cdn

Hope this helps. Please let us know if you have any further questions and we will be glad to assist you further. Thank you!
