if i think back to some of the first apps i’ve used in windows (besides paint which should appear on this list somewhere), winzip has to be among them. in early versions of windows, this wasn’t even an option. in later versions, winzip still provided additional features (like passwords, self extracting executables or larger zip and file size support). now like many applications on this list, there’s even a mac version of winzip available. i haven’t installed it yet, but it’s on my list of things to do in 2010…
