After my whining last week, I ended up ordering an Athlon XP Mobile, a Gigabyte board and 512 MB of Kingston goodness. That's for substance; for style I got a sharp-looking Cooler Master case. The case has a ventilation hole on top just above the CPU, so I picked an AeroCool fan with LEDs to match the case. I kept the hard drive and graphcis card from the old machine, as they're good enough for now. I could have kept the old case, but it's really way to beige...
The end result is a significant performance increase in a pretty package, and this for about $400. I'm happy.
In related news, my Dell GX270 sff at work died this week. It needed a motherboard transplant. Turns out, my Dutch colleague had the exact same happen to his GX270 last week.
