Supported AI coding assistants for Azure Cosmos DB Agent Kit

The Azure Cosmos DB Agent Kit works with assistants that support Agent Skills or a plugin format provided by the kit. Choose a host that can discover installed skills and load task-relevant guidance on demand.

Installation paths by assistant

The following paths are documented in the Agent Kit repository. This table describes available integration paths, not a certification that every host version, model, or subscription supports the same features.

Assistant or host Installation path Prerequisites and considerations
GitHub Copilot in Visual Studio Code. Skills CLI. Use a version with Agent Skills support and check project or user-level skill discovery.
GitHub Copilot CLI. Plugin marketplace. Run plugin commands in a CLI version that supports plugins.
Claude Code. Official plugin marketplace. Use a version with plugin support and confirm that the marketplace plugin is available.
Gemini CLI. Extension installation. Use a version that supports extensions.
OpenAI Codex. Codex marketplace and desktop installation. The documented plugin path uses both the Codex CLI and the ChatGPT desktop app.
Cursor. Skills CLI or host-specific plugin instructions. The repository provides a Cursor plugin manifest. Follow your host's current discovery and installation requirements.
Grok Build. Plugin marketplace. Review the plugin source before using the required trust option.
Kimi Code CLI. GitHub plugin installation. Reload after installing the plugin.
Other Agent Skills-compatible hosts. Skills CLI. Confirm that your host is supported by the installer and can discover skills in the chosen scope.

Installation instructions were checked against the repository on October 16, 2026. These paths weren't runtime-tested in every host. For your environment, verify skill discovery after installation.

Context-loading considerations

On-demand loading keeps the assistant's context focused. A host that inserts the entire rule collection into every prompt can consume context needed for your code, data model, or diagnostics.

If your host loads too much guidance:

  • Select only the skill relevant to your current task.
  • Check whether the host supports progressive skill discovery instead of always-on instructions.
  • Reduce unrelated conversation context and provide the information needed for one task at a time.
  • If your host requires a compiled AGENTS.md file, check its context budget before loading the full collection.

A larger context window doesn't guarantee better recommendations. Validate generated code and performance claims regardless of the host or model.

Skills, documentation, and database access

These capabilities have different requirements:

Capability What you need
Apply Agent Kit guidance to code or a data model. A compatible host with the relevant skills installed and discoverable.
Search current Microsoft documentation. A compatible MCP client connected to the Microsoft Learn MCP server.
Query or manage an Azure Cosmos DB resource. Separately configured database tools, authentication, and appropriate permissions. Installing skills alone doesn't grant access.

AI tools

Connect your coding agent to Microsoft Learn or bring the compatibility information into your assistant.

For a compact index of the guides and their Markdown versions, use the Agent Kit documentation index (llms.txt). This index is a discovery aid, not a crawler policy or a guarantee that an assistant retrieves the articles.

Connect your AI agent
Set up Microsoft Learn MCP in Visual Studio Code.

Read as Markdown
Open a text version to copy into your assistant.

Ask ChatGPT
Choose an installation path for your host and version.

Ask Claude
Choose an installation path for your host and version.

The external links send only a public article URL and a generic prompt. You might need to sign in. If retrieval isn't available, copy the relevant Markdown text instead. An assistant's answer isn't proof that a particular host version is compatible.
