Greetings. Plz help me to find solution.

I have Supermicro server: 2 x Xeon Silver 4214, 256 DDR4, Intel VROC SSD RAID1 + Broadcom MR9560-8i RAID10 4 x SATA Enterprise Western Digital HDD.

Hyper-V is installed with only 2 VM:

  1. 2019 File server
  2. 2012 R2 with Exchange 2013

Both system disk of VMs is located on SSDs. On RAID10 there are only files and mailbases.

Overall RAID10 perfomance is good, here is Diskspeed results:

Command Line: C:\123\DiskSpd\amd64\diskspd.exe -c64G -d300 -r -w40 -t8 -o32 -b64K -Sh -L E:\diskpsdtmp.dat

Both big file copy speed and lots of small files copy speed are about 150-200 mb/sec as expected.

But Windows Backup of Exchange speed is about 200 mb PER MINUTE. Both backup to local disk connected to server or network share.

At the same time backup of fileshare is going about 50 mb per second, that is ok for my network. Thus i think the problem is not in RAID but in VM or Exchange MAilboxdatabase.

But I can't undestand why the backup of Exchange is going so slow.

Can anyone help me?

    Hi @NTforGood

But I can't undestand why the backup of Exchange is going so slow.

From my point of view , I think it's normal behavior because Exchange service needs a lot of resource ( CPU,RAM , disk..ect) compared to fileshare server.

When you schedule Exchange backup try to avoid Business hour to increase backup performance.

    Hi NTforGood,

    Hope you're doing well.

To troubleshoot this issue, you may want to consider the following steps:

    1. Check the system resources on the Hyper-V host and the Exchange VM to ensure that they are sufficient for the backup job.
    2. Verify that the drivers for all hardware components are up to date.
    3. Check the network speed between the Hyper-V host and the backup destination to ensure that it is not a bottleneck.
    4. Review the configuration of the backup job to ensure that it is optimized for your environment.

If you are still experiencing slow backup speeds after performing these steps, we suggest you to go to the Microsoft Customer Service Center to open a ticket so that with their permission level and resource, Microsoft could provide you with better help on your request.

    Best Regards,

    Ian Xue
