Avoid using Azure Redis with On-Prem web site?

I am looking at using Azure Redis for session cache from our on premise web site, potentially having a load balanced web servers.

We've been informed by a third party that we shouldn't attempt to use Azure Redis when using on premise web server as the latency is too great.

Is this statement supported by Microsoft? I understand that there will be an increase in latency as we would be moving from 'InProcess' cache to a cloud option. But just how much latency would this add?

Our other option is to create a Redis server locally, but this just adds more infrastructure work.

Any help appreciated.

Hi, @zac everett Welcome to Microsoft Q&A thanks for posting your question.

Latency could be a problem if the cache is on Azure while the website is on prem. However, we have customers who host website on Azure alongside Azure Cache for Redis, but the database is on-prem. So, you can definitely try out some benchmarking, but you might have better success if website is also hosted on Azure.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

    Regards

    Geetha
