M365 Outlook freezes when called through MAPI. Issue is intermittent. Uninstalling Win11 KB5040527 preview fixes issue

We call outlook from Filemaker using MAPI integration. We press a button in Filemaker and it opens a new email in outlook which we can edit and send. This was working fine until Win11 KB5040527 preview. Now MAPI calls freeze M365 Outlook.

The issue is intermittent, it does not happen every time. Sometimes it works. When Outlook freezes it does not recover and needs to be terminated and restarted.

Uninstalling KB5040527 fixes the issue. But we expect this Preview will become General Release on 13 AUG 2024. Our Windows updates are automatic so everyone will get this come 13 AUG. What can be done to prevent Outlook freezing?

PS. This is similar to issue reported last month:

Seems clear the issue is not with FileMaker since it also affects Dynamics.

This is a Windows MAPI issue.

So doesnt matter what version of FM. FYI, We run FM18 and FM20, both are affected.

The only solution ATM is uninstall the offending KB.

If we get stuck there appears to be a way to prevent specific updates from auto installing by hiding them from windows update.

Using the MS Windows Update Show/Hide tool:
    https://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f22d5fdb-59cd-4275-8c95-1be17bf70b21/wushowhide.diagcab

I didnt locate the official Instructions for the tool, but the forum thread here says this:
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/how-to-preventremove-a-specific-update-from-trying/a8779fd5-195d-4535-8c84-e598d3b0e7a5

"To prevent a specific update from installing on your Windows 10 Pro system, you can use the "Show or hide updates" troubleshooter package provided by Microsoft. Here's how you can do it:

Download the "Show or hide updates" troubleshooter package from the Microsoft website.

Run the troubleshooter and click on 'Advanced' and make sure to check the box for "Apply repairs automatically."

Click Next, and then choose 'Hide updates.'

Select the update you want to prevent from installing (in your case, KB5034441) from the list provided and click Next.

    1. Complete the troubleshooter steps, and the selected update should be hidden and will not be installed.

Please note that hiding updates should be done with caution as they often contain important security patches. Since you're planning to upgrade to Windows 11, which might not be affected by the same issue, this could be a temporary solution until you successfully upgrade."

BTW, It appears that this tool will be deprecated in the future, but isnt yet.

We have solved the problem. It seems that this new KB deploys new Outlook in the computer. As you have tow Outlook (classic and new) it seems Filemaker fezzes. We have uninstalled one of the Outlook apps and it is working fine.

on 13. August 2024 installed the new update KB5035942 and updated outlook (classic) manuely (file>Office Account>Update Now), no problem with Dynamics AX 2009 on 2 pc's right now.

I will comment, if other clients should have other reaction - i think the problem was fixed by microsoft.
