How can I change the default tenant for my account

Hello everyone,

I have an Azure account with a default Tenant and another tenant.

I set up MFA for the default Tenant using the Microsoft Authenticator App but I had issues with my device and had to factory reset it.

The second tenant is the tenant I use since that's where my subscription is.

The problem now is that whenever I am asked to log in to any Microsoft-related site, the default tenant is what shows up and I cannot log in since I don't the Authenticator app was uninstalled.

When I try to add my account to the Authenticator, I am asked to sign in and also provide a token from Authenticator (don't know how this makes any sense).

I can access the second tenant on the portal by using the URL:
https://portal.azure.com/<Tenant ID>,
But every other site access fails. I can't access https://dev.azure.com as it tries to verify my login and asks me for an authenticator code. I also can't sign in to my Visual Studio, same issue.
Basically can't do anything again and it's hampering productivity and very frustrating.

Any help will be deeply appreciated.

    Hii @bayo ,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

It sounds like you're dealing with a situation where a user is trying to re-register for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) in the wrong Microsoft Entra ID tenant.

As you have multiple Microsoft Entra ID tenants (directories), users can be registered for MFA in only one directory at a time. When a user attempts to register or re-register for MFA, they need to be in the correct directory where their account is set up.

The user is currently logged into a directory where MFA is not enabled or configured, they will not be able to re-register for MFA. Instead, their account is registered in another directory where MFA is properly set up where you can re-register MFA in this directory.

    Steps to resolve:

    1. Determine which directory the user’s account is registered in. This can typically be done by logging into the Azure portal and checking the user’s profile.
    2. You will need a global administrator from the correct directory to assist. They can help switch the user’s context to the correct directory.
    3. In the Azure portal, click on your profile icon at the top right, and select "Switch Directory." Choose the directory where the user is registered for MFA.
    4. Once the user is in the correct directory, they can navigate to the MFA registration and re-register MFA via  https://aka.ms/mfasetup or can be done in the azure portal itself.
