Original title: Argh!!  Help with BSOD needed, please

About a month ago my system started "going black" suddenly while playing Black Ops 2 after months of running fine.  I've come to find out that this is a blue screen error as the error information (minidump?) would come up when the system restarted.  I used to think it was a game/STEAM issue, but it has done this a couple times while web surfing.

I've tried:

  • uninstall/update/install audio, video, Logitech (keyboard/mouse/headset) drivers
  • applied the directx SDK fix recommended by Microsoft - no issue
  • run 2 different virus program scans - none found
  • validated integrity of Black Ops 2 (STEAM process) - no issue
  • check disk - no errors
  • defragged hard drive (hey, nothing else was working)

I don't think there's a bios update for my mother board nor graphics cards

Here is an example of a "problem signature"

Problem signature:

  Problem Event Name:                        BlueScreen

  OS Version:                                          6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3

  Service Pack:                                       1_0

  Product:                                               768_1

BlueScreenView consistently reports "Caused by Driver" dxgkrnl.sys and "Caused by Address" dxgkrnl.sys+5d000

System profile:

Any advice appreciated!

"It's not a true crash, in the sense that the Blue Screen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception".

Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OS's like XP to crash.

As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds. If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating. Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU. Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference.

If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.

I would download cpu-z and gpu-z (both free) and keep an eye on the video temps

Please post a copy of your dumpfile as shared file to your Sky Drive with a link here.

The dumpfile will be created at c:\windows\minidump. You may need to change your settings in Windows to be able to see the file. To show hidden files type Folder Options in the search box above the Start button and select View, Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files" is unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked.

What is your computer make and model? If not a branded computer what is your motherboard make and model?

Please download and run Driver View and upload a copy of the report it produces to your Sky Drive.

    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/driverview.html

Please provide a copy of your System Information file. Type System Information in the Search Box above the start Button and press the ENTER key. Select File, Export and give the file a name noting where it is located. Please upload to your Sky Drive, share with everyone and post a link here. The request for a copy of this file is additional to answering the question about make and model.

Please say if you need help with using Sky Drive.
