I've been trying to update my windows defender for a while now,all it does is download the update but does not complete the installation process. It says there was a problem with the network even when the network is working just fine, then requires ,me to re-download which I do but end up encountering the same problem of it not completing the installation even after finishing the download.Help anyone?

    Hi Chomba-121,

Ensure that the date & time is set correctly on your PC.

You can try purging the WD definition cache, in case some corruption exists there.

At a command prompt (admin) enter the following command.

    %programfiles%\windows defender\MpCmdRun.exe -removedefinitions -all  < enter >

You can also request definition updates from within command prompt.

    %programfiles%\windows defender\MpCmdRun.exe -signatureupdate -http  < enter >

exit  <enter >  To leave cmd prompt.

If corrupted data should exist in your cache, this should give you some relief.

    Regards,  Glen

    Hi Chomba-121,

I am glad that WD is working OK for you now. But I am sorry that my suggestion

did not work for you. It is a tip that I picked up, on this forum a while back, from

one of the most respected posters around. My PC gives the same error message.

It obviously had nothing to do with your success.

The description of this procedure is described here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/threat-protection/windows-defender-antivirus/command-line-arguments-windows-defender-antivirus

There must be something wrong with the syntax on the command that I gave you.

    Regards,  Glen

Are you able to update Windows?

Try restart your PC and run Windows Update again.
