Windows 11 Pro Remote Desktop not working from laptop over internet

I purchased Windows 11 Pro specifically for Remote Desktop Functionality. Despite proper configuration, I cannot connect to my desktop from my laptop over the internet, though connections work over local network.

  • Remote Desktop works from my iPad over the internet via Windows App
  • Remote Desktop does not work from my laptop over the internet
  • Using the same Microsoft account on both my devices
  • Port forwarding is configured correctly
  • Have tried all the RD Gateway settings
  • Tested on multiple networks including home wi-fi and mobile hotspot
  • All windows settings and services are properly configured.

I have exhausted all the troubleshooting options and i don't think i can do it anymore.

    Hii Sathwik,

Welcome to Microsoft Community Support! I’m here to help you in resolving your issue.

Based on your description, it looks like the issue is isolated to your Windows laptop’s Remote Desktop client—even though your iPad connects fine over the Internet.

First of all, check the Windows is up to date:

    1. Open Settings: Click the Start button, then click the gear icon, or press Windows + I.
    2. Go to Windows Update: Select Update & Security (or Windows Update if you're on Windows 11).
    3. Check for Updates: Click the Check for updates button. If updates are available, Windows will start downloading and installing them.
    4. Review Installed Updates: Once updated, you can click on View update history to see what has been installed recently. Here are a couple of advanced fixes you can try: -
    5. Disable UDP on the RDP Client: Some Windows 11 users have had success by forcing the Remote Desktop client to use TCP only. To do this: -
      • Press Windows + R, type regedit, and hit Enter.
      • Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Terminal Services\Client (If the folders don’t already exist, you can create them.)
      • Right-click in the right pane, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, name it fClientDisableUDP, and set its value to 1.
      • Restart your laptop and try connecting again.
    6. Switch to the Microsoft Remote Desktop App: Instead of using the built-in Remote Desktop Connection client, consider downloading the free Microsoft Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store. Many users have found that the app handles connections more reliably, especially after Windows updates.
    7. Double-Check Firewall and Outbound Rules: Although everything appears set on your host, make sure your laptop’s firewall isn’t inadvertently blocking outbound RDP traffic. Temporarily disabling third-party antivirus/firewall software (if applicable) can help identify if that’s the cause.

Since your iPad connects without issues, your host PC, port forwarding, and RD Gateway configurations are likely correct. These steps should help resolve any client-specific problems on your laptop.

Hope this helps! Feel free to ask if you need further guidance, you can refer these links for future reference.

    Hello ,

I’m here to help you in resolving your issue

    A. Sometimes name resolution can fail over WAN:

Try connecting via the public IP of your desktop

    B. Temporarily Disable IPv6 on Your Laptop :

IPv6 misbehavior can cause Remote Desktop to hang or fail without error.

    On Laptop:

    1. Settings > Network & Internet > Adapter options
    2. Right-click your active connection > Properties
    3. Uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
    4. Click OK and restart the laptop

    C. Even inbound firewall rules on the client can interfere.

Control Panel > Windows Defender Firewall > Allow an app...

Scroll to Remote Desktop and ensure Private and Public are both allowed
