hi

I'm having issues with the WSUS (3) on my (old) SBS2011 server and windows 10 client PC's so i am looking into upgrading to server 2019 . but there are a bunch of other things running on the old server that i need to maintain ...

Can i move the WSUS and hold off on migrating the domain controller ?

How long will i be able to keep the sbs2011 powered on after i've moved the main domain controller. ?

With a lot of people working from home it's also difficult to get all the client pc's here for that day ... what will happen with the user pc's?

all the client machines needed to be present onsite

As far as I know this shouldn't be a requirement. One thing though when migrating from SBS to Standard; you'll need to move the computer accounts from SBSComputers container to Computers on the new domain controller. This could also affect group policy.

can i deploy WSUS on a server 2019 but keep the FSMO on the SBS2011 for now ?

I don't see a problem with this either.

After you move FSMO roles to the new Windows Server 2019 Standard, Datacenter or Essentials the SBS2011 will no longer compliant with the EULA. Microsoft enforces this by a 21 day countdown. After those 21 days are over your SBS 2011 will shut itself down, it will be useless for you. You need to demote, unjoin and decommission the server and repurpose the hardware.

Hi Patric, thank you for your answer

if i do this , what will the impact be on my users ? i remember when we upgraded to the SBS 2011 all the client machines needed to be present onsite (it wasdone by a consultant at the time) , and we have a lot of WFH in the organisation right now.
either for users that pass onsite during the 21 days period and for users who might arrive after

can i deploy WSUS 4 on a server 2019 but keep the FSMO on the SBS2011 for now ?
