My PC is connected via a Workgroup to my wife's PC - her PC is wired to our printer.

When I send a document for printing - it appears on the printer queue on my PC but the Status is blank - then after about a minute it disappears from my printer queue - but nothing prints.

Looking at our Network, I can see the printer but cannot Connect to Printer - Operation failed with error 0x0000011b

In the mean time, on my PC, I have deleted the link to our printer and now cannot re-install, as the wizard cannot locate the printer via the network.

Recent Windows Updates Installed

12-09-2021 - KB2310138 (Version 1.349.599.0)
14-09-2021 - KB2310138 (Version 1.349.704.0)
15-09-2021 - KB2310138 (Version 1.349.766.0)
15-09-2021 - KB890830 (v5.93)

Any simple work around or an update from Microsoft - would us minions receive an indication of a Microsoft correction or would we learn by osmosis?

Ideas Please

    Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print", add DWORD RpcAuthnLevelPrivacyEnabled = 0. Restart the Print Spooler, and you should be able to print.

    When the Registry DWORD is set to RpcAuthnLevelPrivacyEnabled=1, Windows encrypts RPC communication with network printers and/or print servers. Performing the above is much faster than uninstalling the KB that was applied.

    This has haunted us for 6 days.

    Hello Drow,

    Yes, there are three updates released recently that may provide this behavior: (KB5005613, KB5005627 and KB5005563). The reason is they are addressed to correct an explot vulnerability in printer driver injection (called PrintNightmare)

    Solution is to Create a GPO in the computer configuration:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/kb5005010-restricting-installation-of-new-printer-drivers-after-applying-the-july-6-2021-updates-31b91c02-05bc-4ada-a7ea-183b129578a7

    Or edit the registry lines:

    NoWarningNoElevationOnInstall = 1
    UpdatePromptSettings = 1
    RestrictDriverInstallationToAdministrators - 0

    Hope this helps with the issue,
    Best regards,

    Hi, You have been patched on one system but not on the other. There has been a protocol change, for security, and one of the machines has the new communication methods and the other one does not.

    Make sure both machines have the latest update and you should be good.

    The protocol change went into Windows 10 in January but has not been a requirement until the patch yesterday.

    Thanks to a engineer at MS for helping out on this.
