Trying to download and install software for new printer, but I am blocked by security. But it doesn't say where or how to fix it.

Since the installation of security update KB5072033, I lost connectivity to our Boca printer. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling as well as downloading new drivers multiple times, and I am still unable to connect. I cannot uninstall that particular update, as it has been too long. Any idea what I can do?

    Hi,

Thank you for sharing your question. I understand how frustrating it is when you’re simply trying to install printer software and Windows security blocks it without giving you any clear explanation.

This typically happens when Windows 11’s security features or system policies prevent device or driver installations often because Windows thinks the installer isn’t trusted or a protection mode is enabled. Microsoft confirms that this block can occur when system policies or device‑installation restrictions are active, especially on Windows 11, where security rules can stop new hardware or drivers from installing.

A common cause for printers specifically is the Windows Protected Print Mode, which can prevent installation of printer drivers from manufacturers like Brother, HP, or others. Disabling this mode allows the installer to run normally. Microsoft and Brother documentation explain that turning off Windows Protected Print Mode in Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Printer preferences restores the ability to install full printer software.

If the issue is related to Windows device‑installation policies, removing or disabling these restrictions in the Group Policy Editor (Windows 11 Pro) or Registry (Windows 11 Home) usually resolves the block. These hidden rules are a known cause of “installation forbidden” errors when adding printers and other devices.

May I ask whether Windows shows any specific message—such as “Installation forbidden by system policy” or whether the printer software simply fails to launch?

Feel free to share what happens on screen, and I’ll guide you step‑by‑step to get the installation working.

    I hope this helps.

    Best Regards,

    Noel
