A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
When Outlook or Microsoft sign-in does not accept verification codes from an authenticator app, the issue is usually with how the sign-in page or security info is configured, not the code itself.
Try these steps depending on the scenario:
- Confirm the correct account and method
- Make sure the email address used to sign in is exactly the one configured in the authenticator (correct domain such as .com vs .co.uk, and correct spelling of the name).
- If the sign-in page offers a phone or email option that is not recognized, verify that the domain and name are correct. If they are correct but still not recognized, account recovery may be required.
- Use an alternate verification method if available
- If another method is configured (SMS, alternate email, or a different app), choose that instead of the authenticator code and sign in.
- After signing in, go to the Security basics page and select Update info to review and fix the security methods, or choose I don't have any of these to replace security info if needed.
- If verification codes are not arriving
- If the sign-in flow says a code was sent (SMS or email) but nothing arrives, follow the guidance for missing verification codes:
- Sign in to the Security basics page, select Update info, and choose a method that works or I don't have any of these to replace security info.
- If using another Microsoft email (Outlook/Hotmail/Live/MSN) as the alternate address, use a private/incognito browser window so both accounts can stay signed in while retrieving and entering the code.
- If the phone/email shown is not recognized
- If the phone or email offered for verification is not recognized, confirm:
- The correct email domain is used (for example, .com vs .co.uk).
- The email name is typed correctly.
- If the address is correct but the security info still looks wrong, use the account recovery process.
- If completely locked out by two-step verification
- If no verification method works and sign-in is blocked by two-step verification, use the account recovery flow and provide as much accurate information as possible, or contact support as described in the referenced guidance.
If this is a work or school account and the authenticator is the only method and cannot be used, an administrator may need to reset multifactor authentication settings so the account can be re-registered in the app.
